10 Things to Know When Starting a Residential Painting Project

When you want to give your house a refreshing look, you always prefer painting, as it is an immediate and budget-friendly solution.

To make your process easier, there are a few things you should know before beginning a residential project.

The following are the 10 essential things you must know before starting a residential painting project.

1. Understanding the Residential Painting Process

First, we need to understand that residential painting encompasses not only painting but also interior painting, exterior painting, ceilings, and woodwork. It is about giving your home a makeover.

2. Choosing the Right Type of Paint

Every surface requires different types of paint; interior paints are softer and easier to clean, while exterior paints are weather-resistant. For a smooth and classy finish, opt for matte or satin. If the area is touched frequently, choose semi-gloss, as it is easily wipeable and durable. Try on a sample wall before buying the paint.

3. Preparing the Surface

Surface preparation is a crucial step. If your walls are dusty, cracked, and uneven, the paint will not stick properly. So before painting

  • Clean the walls.
  • Fill the cracks and holes.
  • Scrape off the loose flakes of old paint.
  • Apply primer.

Primer is a foundation that makes the paint long-lasting.

4. Choosing Colour

Choosing colour is the most confusing part; sometimes a colour uplifts the mood, and sometimes it makes the room dull. Try to follow colour psychology. Try using colours that are calm and peaceful in rooms, as well as spacious and clean in living rooms. Also, go for the modern and classy colours.

5. Considering the Quality of Paint

The cheap paint will initially save you money, but it is stressful in the long term. The good-quality paint lasts for years and does not fade. The low-quality paint peels off early, causing a double expense. Instead of saving, invest in high-quality brands.

6. Examining the Right Time to Paint

In rainy and freezing weather, the paint does not dry properly. The best time for residential painting is spring, when the temperature is mild and the humidity is low. Also, plan your project around your schedule.

7. Choosing the Painters

A good painter not only paints but also guides you in selecting colours, preparing walls, and choosing a finishing style. Before hiring, check their reviews, review their previous work, and obtain a written estimate. The professional touches make all the difference.

8. Protecting Your Furniture

People often overlook this point: before painting, move the furniture away from the walls or cover it with a plastic sheet. Lay the old sheets on the floor; otherwise, it will be difficult to remove the paint splashes. Attach the tape to switch boards and handles.

9. Giving Proper Drying Time

Give the proper drying time after every coat; if the paint is not dried correctly, it will cause uneven patches and bubbles. Between each coat, wait at least 4-5 hours, depending upon the weather.

10. Inspecting and maintaining

Give a final check after painting. Look for areas with mixed spots and uneven surfaces. A good painter will properly inspect. Once it is done, maintain it by cleaning the walls with a damp cloth. With proper care, the paint will not fade for years to come.

Whether you are painting your dream home or just a small area of your home, you have to take care of these things so that you can enjoy a stress-free and smooth experience.
